How To Spring Clean Your Social Media

Time for a Spring Clean?


Good morning! Today I am sitting in my little office in Sheffield, with the sun streaming through the windows and a freshly brewed coffee in my mug.  It's the first mailout of March and things are looking good! It's amazing how much brighter things feel with some sun on your face, right? 

So today I'm harnessing that vitamin D boost and throwing the windows open, blowing away the cobwebs and getting excited about Spring and Summer just around the corner. We've launched a new mini-package and this month sees the start of so many exciting projects! 

We know that many businesses are seasonal. Just like me, you thrive in the sunshine. What can you do today that is going to set you up for the next Quarter? Maybe its a polish of your packages, a jig around of the website, a new seasonal cover page for your Facebook page or maybe it's time for a whole new re-brand. Wherever you're at, don't hold onto the winter blues. Spruce things up a bit and get out there!

In the UK, over 81% of small to medium businesses use social media, and over 94% do so for marketing purposes. Depending on your goals, your business and preferences, you might have some time to market your business on a range of social media platforms…

Facebook is currently the largest with over 1 Billion worldwide users, and is known to provide the largest opportunities when communicating with consumers in a non-obtrusive way. To put the scale into perspective, Facebook users share 1 million links every 20 minutes! 

Twitter is most popular in the USA and is effective when communicating business -to-business in the UK. With 241 million users, if you can be concise enough to get your message across in 140 characters it could be for you!

In addition, Instagram is now increasingly popular with young users. Many brands are participating through the use of hashtags and posting pictures customers can relate to. The most followed brand is National Geographic due its spectacular images and wanderlust appeal. Overall, the world of social media is a very large pond full of very enthusiastic fish – so what can you do to make the most of it?

GET CLEAR ON YOUR MESSAGE

By posting information online we are hoping to engage somehow with our ideal client. By getting clear on who you are and what you do, you can be confident putting your message out there. Defining your brand will help you think about your clients and their needs. Are you portraying that accurately online?

  • Why are you using social media? What are you trying to achieve?
  • What do you do?
  • Who do you help?
  • What services do you provide?
  • How can you assist?

MAKE SURE YOUR INFORMATION IS UP TO DATE

Is your social media doing your business and your capabilities justice? Take a look (or ask a friend!) to answer the following questions:

  • Are your profile picture and cover pictures clear?
  • Are your contact details up to date? Can your clients easily get in touch?
  • Utilise the call to action button (Facebook) or link option (Twitter / Instagram ) – is it directing clients to make a booking?
  • Are your services easily found or obvious to the reader? Update your ‘services’ and ‘about’ sections.

BE ACTIVE

Have you noticed that sometimes you can post but no one seems to see it? Social Media feeds are dictated by algorithms (i.e. a computer decides who gets to see your stuff!), and the best way to stay top of your followers’ feeds is to be active. Posting, commenting and sharing with your community will increase your engagement rates and subsequently increase your visibility. Can’t commit to frequent posting? Pick a schedule that works for you and stick to it – consistency is key.

ADD VALUE

As a professional, you should always be looking to be seen as the ‘expert’. You hold the qualifications, you know your stuff. Do the readers of your posts know that? Make sure that you are adding something of value to your audience. You’ll create a much stronger brand reputation if you focus on creating useful content that viewers will want to share and engage with!

  • Share information – News report, useful information or interesting articles
  • Add your own content – Have an opinion on something? Share it! 

 

AUTOMATE

Already an avid user of Social Media but feel like it could turn into a black hole where your time in concerned? There are lots of options when it comes to scheduling and automation which could turn an hour-a-day job, into an hour-a-week, freeing up your time to spend doing what you love. Also handy when it comes to going on holiday to keep your page active!

GET INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY

There are many ways you can signpost people to your social media posts - #hashtags, tagging fellow brands, clients and associations and adding accurate descriptions.  Make it easy for people to find you – and spread the love! 

By focussing on one of these aspects at a time, it is easy to steadily grow your following and reach. However, digital marketing takes time, patience and a clear strategy to produce direct results. Create quality content that adds value to your audience – pictures, posts and articles will display your business and abilities clearly which can you share on social media to show everyone how great you are!
